Writing Your Recovery

Beginning your recovery opens the doors to a miraculous journey. Recovery is not shedding an addiction, to replace it with another, but your personal search for the meaning of life. Recovery is finding forgiveness for the past, peace for the present and hope for the future. Your pen and paper can walk with you through the process, a faithful friend and gentle therapist. Begin your recovery writing practice today. Start by writing about the present:

  • Keep a diary of the day's events. Write about the emotions you experience.
  • What did you learn today? How has this helped you? What will you do different from now on?
  • Write about the present every day.

Persons in recovery often have gaps in memory. Yet all your memories are inside your mind. Writing can bring them back. Tips for regaining memories:
  • Start with what you do remember and as you write doors in your mind will open. Capture everything that comes to you.
  • Begin with "I remember." Write it over and over until a memory appears. Or write "I don't remember" and see where your pen takes you.
  • If you have childhood pictures, choose one, look at it, close your eyes and visualize it in your mind for a moment and then write.
  • Always follow new memories. If you can't write at the time you remember something, jot a note and write about it later. If you let it slip away, you might not find it again.
  • Try to organize your writing memories, by the age you were. If you can't remember exactly, get it as close as possible. Your writing pages will become your life story.
  • Write about the past two or three times each week.

Visualize your future. You must set goals, plan for what you need and want, and believe that you can accomplish it. Write about your future.
  • Where are you heading with your life? Were do you want to be?
  • What are your goals, your dreams? How would your life look if all your dreams came true?
  • Capture on paper, the beautiful, joyful life you want and will achieve. It will become your destiny.
  • Write about your future at least once each week.
